I have one of these just collecting dust. One interesting thing that
happened about 15 years ago (back when I thought this was a cool
keyboard)- I left it turned on during a thunderstorm. All the
parameters on the saved patches turned into weird symbols beyond
numbers. The sounds were all the strangest stuff that ever came out of
this thing. When I changed the parameters, they would cycle thru a
series of symbols, then hit numbers and act normal. I saved the
settings onto a tape drive, before I lost them all. I still have that
tape.
Anyway, this implies to me that there may be many possibilities for
serious bending inside this sterile '80's cheesoid. Anyone have any
ideas or experience with a CZ? This thing's screaming "BEND ME!!!"

This guy is the only one I've found who's bent a CZ Series keyboard
(CZ-101 in this case). Maybe he's tried different models. Yours
sounds promising; if it got bent by mother nature surely there must
be potential if you start poking around in there!

i have a cz101 that is blessed with the same neurosis. mine happened
thru dying batteries. beautfully whacked out sounds. i use them all the
time.
these two guys have explored and mapped out the cz's hidden parameteres
and made them accessible with software editors. the first one uses
soundiver(mac or pc). the second one wrote a program for atari st.

HIDDEN PARAMETERS! WOW! I have soundiver(old, old version), but don't
use it because it used to make my old pc(3 incarnations ago)crash. I
might have to dust it off and give it another try!
Funny thing about the neurosis- it was all in the software! The
hardware was left untouched. Saving what was left of the insanity
after I figured out what happened was a good idea though. I guess you
could call it "bent software"
Thank you much, Shayne- I guess this thing CAN be made useful! Who'd
a thunk it! A cz-1? hmmm... never knew they existed. Another wrinkle
in the brain.....

Ya, my CZ does that sometimes, but only with the pitch bend. It will boot up
with some out-of-range number for the pitch bend range, and the pitch bender
will make weird sounds. But then when i lower the pitch bend range to normal,
it works fine after that. I think this can happen if the battery memory starts
to
go? Ya, data bending seems like a good idea for this thing. You could
probably recreate that lightning storm by modifying the code for SoundDiver.

That just gave me an idea- I think I can load the tape data back into
the cz, then save it from the cz to sounddiver. Maybe if that works I
can do some further monkeying around with these "alien" parameters. Or
is that what you meant? Jeez- I'm gonna be real busy for a
while....Thanks!

My 101 does that as well. I've never heard of a seperate battery
battery for storing patches, I have to have batteries installed or an
adaptor to retain patches. There is a mod for using a 9v battery to
keep the patches, though. Since it happens with dc adaptor or
batteries installed, I figure the pitch wheel thing is a standard
quirk. The funny thing is that when it's not working properly,
pitching up the wheel makes the exact same 'squeal' as a DH-100 with
the bad transistor.

The 5000 does seem to have a battery backup, because it stores the
patches. (I don't know this for sure, because I never actually opened
it up, but I soon will) There's also a memory cartridge something like
a playstation cartridge(or more accurately a programmable commodore
cartridge), and a backup interface for a cassette tape drive(or
recorder) The weird parameters I mentioned aren't just for pitch, but
are global! hmmm... maybe I should be glad it's a 5000 after all.
Three backups....

This is a bit like something I do to my Casio CZ-101. Old casio equipment
had polarities reversed from usual gear. I reverse the polarity on the wall
wart the feeds it, and all memory is tranformed. This makes the pitch bend
wheel range set at 99, when the normal range available is 12, instant bent
sounds. It also changes other parameters to functions not usually
available. All of these changes are no longer available if you change them
to a normal value though, so each thing you change draws your new patch out
of seeming chaos, instead of beginning with the same init each time. fun

Nice tip, incidentally I posted this tip on the cz group a while
back - the CZ-101 requires a hard-to-find 900ma or greater wallwart.
The one for the old Sega Genesis is 9v 1.2a and is usually available
at thrift stores

You mean supplying opposite DC polarity? Like if it's tip -, you give
tip +, and it still works?? Woahhhh.

That's pretty much it. My wart is one of those universal things, and it has
a polarity switch on it. Normal operation requires it be on - for the
casios, but + for everything else. Use + on the casio and it will freak
out, then you can return it to - and you'll have the "easter egg" mode, I
guess it would be. Pretty fun. It's really the only way I use my CZ for
the last year or so.

yeah that is beezaar, but if it works it works. i wonder will happen if
you try to save those random patches into internal memory. my
"dying-battery" patches were automatically written into memory. when i
put in fresh batteries, they were still there.

In my experience, those bizzare patches are instantly in internal memory,
and anything that was there before is gone. It saves all the wierdness
unless you change it to normal settings and save again. It's fun to make a
pretty normal patch but keep the bend range, which turns out to be something
like 5 or 6 octaves in each direction. There is a bit of a glitch at the top
and bottom of the bend range, but nothing wrong with that, right?

hey pat, inspired by the recent discussion, i've been messing with wall
warts, polarity, and near-dead batteries, trying to get my 101 to come
up with a new set of sounds. when i initially reinstalled the batteries
there was a new set of sounds, but they weren't anywhere near as
exciting as the old set(which i saved to cartridge). now, nothing i do
will change this new set of sounds. neither polarity reversal nor
leaving the batteries out for even 10-15 minutes with memory protect
off. what exactly do you do? what are the specs for your wall wart? i've
tried a couple different 9v 1a and a 9v 850ma and a reversed polarity 9v
1a. nada. hmmmm? mebe wait for a thunderstorm? that or dig out the atari.
incidentally, i just used the 101 in a jam - one of the sounds(from the
old set) evolved for a good 5 minutes while holding the keys and another
five after i let go, then sustained infinitely. loads...
i've observed that some other sounds mess up the key intervals as well
as reversing the direction of pitch on the keyboard.

Did you look at the parameters for your patches, such as enevelope settings
and pitch bend range. When I do this, my pitch bend range always sets
itself to 99, which I think is the most useful "special feature". But the
new patches created often have wierd envelopes, such as long sustains and
stuff. Returning the wall wart to the correct polarity will not change
anything on your CZ, it will only make it so that the CZ will not reset to
this wierd mode everytime you turn it on. Once you put the polarity right,
then you can edit these new patches like any other, except you can take care
of the parameters which are out of the normal range. I don't know if this
makes sense. It basically just opens a few doors, and if you don't close it
by returning the polarity to normal, you'll never walk through the doors...

I recently got a Casio CZ-101, and after taking a little time to investigate the
board, I must
say that I'm not that much of a fan of the bends I was able to find. Don't get
me wrong, there
are quite a few, but just nothing of interest to me. If anyone is interested in
this unit before I
put it up for auction next week, please message me at acrodot@...
Thanks
